William Gillies was one of Scotland’s most important twentieth century painters in landscape and still life. In his role at Edinburgh College of art he taught and profoundly influenced an entire generation of artists. Gillies’ part in the story of British Modernism has been partially hidden, but is revealed in William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art, a major new book by Andrew McPherson, published by Edinburgh University Press in October 2023, and supported by the RSA. This talk is presented by RSA Collections Curator Sandy Wood, in the context of the book and the associated Royal Scottish Academy exhibition that celebrates the 2023 anniversaries of Gillies’ birth and death.

Sandy Wood is Collections Curator at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture. A fine art and museum graduate, Sandy has worked in the arts for over twenty years and in his role at the RSA is custodian of the Sir William G Gillies RSA bequest.

This event is now fully booked.
