Join us in our series of short talks and Q&As as we hear from calligrapher and painter Susie Leiper and artist Andrew Mackenzie. A special screening of Homing by Dalziel + Scullion will accompany the talk.
Nan Shepherd: a serendipitous relationship, Susie Leiper
Susie will describe her serendipitous relationship with the Scottish author Nan Shepherd. By chance, they share the Royal Bank of Scotland’s £5 note (Nan’s portrait is on the face of the note and Susie’s calligraphy is on the back). A Purcell Paper Award encouraged Susie to create a complete handwritten and illustrated edition of Nan’s seminal work The Living Mountain which will be exhibited in London in 2024.
Homing, Dalziel + Scullion
This film presentation was originally commissioned by the Art History Department of Columbia College Chicago for the Art Now series. Within the film presentation Matthew and Louise reflect on a handful of past and recent works, as well as their backgrounds, which shaped their approach to landscape and their motivations for working in the subject areas they focus on. The film was made before the studio moved to the Outer Hebrides.
The Nature of Landscape, Andrew Mackenzie
Andrew will talk about his fascination with the landscape; from his background near a community woodland in rural Scotland, to his current home in the Scottish Borders. He will discuss the development of his work, including influences, processes, and philosophies – focusing specifically on his painting Quarry 4, Blue, and touching on how sensitivity towards landscape is important to understanding our place in the world today.
This event is now sold out.
