During the late 19th and early 20th Century a group of Edinburgh women were involved in various movements to bring about change in terms of education, health and women’s suffrage. These women were Louisa and Flora Stevenson (1835-1908) (1839 – 1905), Sarah Mair (1846 – 1941) and Dr. Elsie Inglis (1864- 1917). Mrs Margaret Reid (1854 – 1926), the last private owner of Lauriston Castle, was a contemporary of these women, studying physiology with the Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women in 1886. Sarah Mair was one of the founding members of this association and Elsie Inglis was one of the 72 women in her class.
In this talk we will discuss the obstacles the pioneers encountered in their fight for equality and also their remarkable achievements.
