Mary Cameron: Life in Paint
Mary Cameron (1865-1921) was a female artist ahead of her time. Born in Edinburgh, she began her career as a portraitist and genre painter, but training in Paris soon developed a taste for foreign travel. In 1900 she visited Madrid for the first time, and was captivated by the Spanish culture, people and scenery. Establishing studios in Madrid and Seville, she painted traditional peasant life, dramatic bullfights and rural landscapes. Although Cameron was admired by her contemporaries, her name is now little-known. Timed to coincide with a major new exhibition at the City Art Centre, this lecture charts the fascinating story of Cameron’s life and career. Dr Helen Scott is Curator of Fine Art at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh.
