Divided Ground
Currently Emeritus Professor and former Head of Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, Jake Harvey works in the Scottish Borders. Scotland’s geology and ubiquitous stone informs his current sculpture practice. Formed in Earth’s mantle and surface then further shaped over eons by the erosive forces of wind, water and ice, our topography evolved. In carving a fragment of Lewisian Gneiss, part of North Uist’s primordial crust, the artist reveals in Scotland’s most ancient rock, a sense of deep time and landscape creation.
