Landscape emerged as an artistic subject in the 16th century. By the 19th century it had become the preferred subject matter for many innovative artists in Scotland and much further afield. As artists tried out new and exciting ways of depicting the changing effects of light and weather on the landscape, painting outdoors became increasingly standard practice. As we approach Christmas, Tricia Allerston, presents a wide range of winter landscapes in the National Galleries of Scotland. It also considers the particular challenges facing landscape artists when working outdoors in the winter months.
Dr Patricia Allerston is Deputy Director and Chief Curator of European and Scottish Art at the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS). She is currently co-directing the major capital project to create a new suite of galleries for historical Scottish art at the Scottish National Gallery, scheduled for completion in summer 2023.
