In John Henry Lorimer’s portrait of Sarah Elizabeth Siddons Mair, there are several references to her varied interests and attainments, including chess and archery. During her lifetime of 94 years she was at the heart of the pioneering movements in Edinburgh to achieve the education, enfranchisement and freedom of women. A woman of intelligence and determination, she faced challenges with ‘a warm graciousness’ and ‘without an inch of red tape about her’. For this in-person talk, Dr Sandra Marwick will discuss elements of the life of Sarah Elizabeth Siddons Mair. Sandra is a former member of Edinburgh Museums and Galleries’ staff. She now researches and writes about Edinburgh people.
