To accompany our exhibition Classical Edinburgh, this fully illustrated talk will look at the most important maps showing the development of Classical Edinburgh, looking at who made these maps, why, and for whom. During this time, maps underwent a major transformation in form and content driven particularly by some of the new values inherent in the creation of Edinburgh’s New Town. The talk will also examine the question of how far we should trust these maps as a true reflection of the reality down on the ground. Chris Fleet is Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, where he has worked since 1994. His primary responsibilities have been with digital maps and the Library’s maps website. He has also researched and spoken on the Library’s map collections, and is a co-author of Edinburgh: Mapping the City (2014).
